Empty Beaches, Full Questions: Neochori and the New Camping Law
Neochori’s untouched coastline beckons, but Greece’s new camping law casts uncertainty over spontaneous stays. A surprising beach find adds to the day’s reflections.
The Ionian coast continues to reveal its secrets. Driving south, I stumbled upon Neochori Beach—a stretch of sand so pristine and deserted, it felt like a personal discovery. The gentle waves whispered tales of solitude, and the horizon stretched endlessly, inviting contemplation.

Yet, amidst this serenity, a question loomed: Is it still permissible to linger here overnight?
Greece’s recent legislation has tightened the reins on free camping. The new law prohibits parking motorhomes or setting up tents in public spaces, including beaches, forests, and archaeological sites. Even on private property, hosting more than one camper van is restricted unless it’s part of a licensed camping facility. Penalties for non-compliance range from fines to potential imprisonment.
This shift aims to protect natural habitats and public spaces from overuse. However, for travelers like me, who cherish the spontaneity of road trips and the allure of secluded spots, it introduces a layer of uncertainty. There was one motorhome parked in the dunes and the owner just came back from a swim right next to it: “No trouble, as long as you are nice with the locals.” This might or might not change once the new law is enforced (perhaps more strictly throughout the high season?).
As I pondered these changes, a peculiar sight caught my eye—a large, abandoned item resting on the beach. Its presence was jarring against the untouched backdrop, a stark reminder of human impact even in the most remote places.
Neochori Beach, with its untouched beauty, remains a testament to Greece’s natural splendor. But as regulations evolve, the way we engage with these landscapes must adapt. Respecting the environment and adhering to local laws ensures that such treasures remain unspoiled for future travelers.
