Potato Salad

Stasi prison December 25, 1985

Celebrating day and night.

No guards have been seen in days.

Our only focus is on togetherness and food.

It must be the equivalent of several monthly salaries on the tables.

This is how our families show sympathy and solidarity.

One guy cried: he ever ate that well outside.

Some blokes managed to boil sausages in the army food containers.

Home made potato salad from a mom, kept outside the windows.

It’s been cold enough so it survived and didn’t turn sour.

Playing chess, reading to each other during the days.

Half of the day spent preparing the meals.

Wonderful evening moments.

We shared funny Christmas episodes from our families for days.

Helps tremendously with the pain and sadness.

Still miss them like crazy.
