Stasi prison July 01, 1985

Life!

Color.

Hope!

End of June 1985 while still in Stasi pre-trial jail my mom met people with sons and husbands that were also political prisoners. I noticed a drastic change in her letters and approach. All of a sudden there was understanding, hope and she shared her newly gained energy right away.

My concerns melted, the new foundation gave me strength.

A letter from mom.

Vibrant, colorful, pictures.

I had no idea that was allowed.

What happened?

The letter was written before the trial.

“New thoughts and learnings through an angel of a person.”

Who did they meet?

I am relieved that she feels hopeful again.

And starts sharing this newly acquired energy right away.

I hope this will also help dad.

He looked beat up.

Exhausted.

Still no word on the transport.

Where to, when?

“End July.”

Why wait that long?

We invent games.

Still 3 of us.

I hear Bautzen is severe.

Also the prison in Hohenschönhausen is rumored to be really bad.

There are tales about beatings, sleep deprivation, physical restraints.

My cell mates wait for their transport as well.

We all got between 12 and 18 months.

I hope for more colorful letters.
